It’s Good to be Bored

Lifehack.org ran a nice post on why boredom is actually a good thing. Here’s why:

  • Being bored turns your mind inward and encourages reflection.
  • Boredom is nearly always essential to creativity.
  • Boredom stimulates the search for better ways to things like nothing else does.
  • Boredom is an essential step in falling asleep and getting enough rest.

So next time you’re bored realize you’re also open to inspiration >:)

In-town Check-in

In town check-inTraveling to new places is always nice, however if you don’t pack light, it can become quite a hassle to go around town with your traveling gear. While this might not be as bad when arriving, it becomes more problematic once you’ve finished shopping at your destination and are headed home.

A brilliant solution to this problem we saw recently in Hong Kong and it’s called In-town Check-in. When you’re traveling by Airport Express train to the airport, you can check in your luggage at Hong Kong Central Station or Kowloon Station. Simply check-in your lugagge and receive your boarding pass as early as 1 day before take-off or as late as 90 minutes before departure. And then you’re off to enjoy the city again. No more boring waiting at the airport and no back problems due to carrying around those heavy bags. We can’t wait until more cities around the world copy this idea >:)

USB Rechargeable Battery

UBSCellWe noticed it again this holiday period: when traveling you just carry around too much stuff. One of those things that typically take up  scarce space is a battery recharger.  We  dare not leave home without one (just to make sure that the batteries in our camera etcetera can get recharged).

Now consider this brilliant solution. Batteries that no longer need a separate device to recharge, but can do so simply via any availably USB port. USBCell makes it possible. Rechargeable batteries are obviously good news for the environment but now also good news for those wanting to cut down on their junk when traveling or for those who are just terrible at finding these recharger devices when you need them >:)

P.S: Please share with us any great solutions you have found to cut down on the weight & size of your traveling gear.

Save Your Ideas Online

Writeidea Wouldn’t it be nice to have one central place where you can put down your ideas, organize them according to topic and share them with people? WriIdea.com makes it possible. We are definitely going to give this service a try & report back with our findings >:)

Tackle any Issue With a List of 100

notebook We came across an interesting post on litemind.com which gave a great lifehack on how to tackle any issue. Simply  force yourself to figure out (and write down) 100 ways to solve the problem you’re facing.  Apparently the first 30 entries are easiest to come up with as these are coming directly from your conscious mind. The next 40 entries are the most difficult: it’s hard to get past your initial ideas and truly figure out new ones. it’s important to go ahead though as the final phase (the last 30 entries) are where the real “gems” are as by then you will have exhausted your conscious mind. At that stage your unconscious mind will be able to express itself more freely and the best ideas come to you. While at it, two things are important: i) do the list in one go and ii) eliminate distractions.

All in all an interesting method to get your creative juices flowing >:)

A Paperless Life?

earth class mail logoWouldn’t it be nice if you could get rid of most of that (junk-) mail that reaches your door mat every day? Wouldn’t it be great to be able to open up your browser while on vacation in New Zealand and see which letters were delivered to you in New York? Earth Class Mail makes it possible. The idea is simple: tell everybody to send their mail to a P.O. Box. Earth Class Mail picks it up, scans your envelopes and places them in your virtual post box. With a few mouse clicks you decide which post to open and scan, which mail to forward to a physical address and which envelopes to destroy.

Plans start at $14.95/month and run up to $59.95 depending on the number of documents you wish to receive and number of named recipients you want to attach to the service. And there you are. A step further to a paperless life and mobile mail.

Earth Class Mail currently offers several P.O. boxes in the United States and a couple of street addresses along side(which might be necessary for certain deliveries by the likes of UPS & Fedex). Know of something similar in Europe & Asia anyone? >:)

Get Your Desktop Anywhere

LogMeIn

Have you ever been on the road, packed with laptop and mobile, yet desperately in need of that one particular file which happens to be at your desktop computer? Have you ever spent too much time on the phone with one of your loved ones, trying to get them to do what it is they should do to get their computers working again? Well, there’s a solution to both problems. Simply find a browser and connect to your desktop of that of someone else via the internet and get that file or solve that problem.

The company that makes it possible (free of charge btw) is www.LogMeIn.com. Install some software on the computer (both Mac & PC) that you want to access and the rest will take care of itself. Extremely easy to install & operate >:)

Virtual Conference & Expo

AMD Virtual Experience 2.0Wouldn’t it be nice to attend a couple of more conferences each year? These industry events are just great ways to catch up with the latest trends and see what others are working on. Well, with today’s state of technology, there’s no reason why you couldn’t attend a conference online. AMD shows you how.

With the introduction of their latest product, AMD basically made available the entire conference and expo on the web. That includes:

  • Key Note Speeches. All addresses can be seen on video and therefore it’s easy to decide which ones you want to see and which you don’t or just skip through those parts that don’t have your interest;
  • The Webinar Center. Again an easy overview of several presentations including audio and graphic material;
  • The Press Center. Highlights of the expo tailored to journalists;
  • Expo. Different companies displaying their products and services in virtual booths.

The AMD Virtual Experience 2.0 succeeds very well in giving the visitor the feeling of actually attending the conference. This even includes a virtual badge, a digita conference bag and an opportunity to win prizes by means of leaving your business card.

We would love to see more of those virtual conferences coming online. The only thing that’s missing is a virtual bar, but we’re confident somebody will pick that up before the next conference >;)

Unify Communications

Availability Today Microsoft launched its new Unified Communications product by means of a webcast where Bill Gates & Jeff Raikes showed off the new technology. A couple of ideas are central to the concept which provide some real added value in our day to day communications:

  • Voice is integrated in the windows environment. So it will be just as easy to make a call to one of your contacts as it is to send an email or initiate an instant message now;
  • The entire concept is centered around availability of yourself which can be easily viewed by anyone by means of the familiar status indicator that we know from instant messaging;
  • Collaboration between people (via IM, phone or videoconferencing)is as easy as drag-and-drop.
  • Multiple devices such as your pc, phone and mobile work seamlessly, providing you access to different communications services.

All in all this approach looks capable of simplifying our daily communications significantly and enhancing productivity while at it. We’re already looking forward to Apple’s response >:)
