The New Inspirer

Today Microsoft launched its new Unified Communications product by means of a webcast where Bill Gates & Jeff Raikes showed off the new technology. A couple of ideas are central to the concept which provide some real added value in our day to day communications:

• Voice is integrated in the windows environment. So it will be just as easy to make a call to one of your contacts as it is to send an email or initiate an instant message now;
• The entire concept is centered around availability of yourself which can be easily viewed by anyone by means of the familiar status indicator that we know from instant messaging;
• Collaboration between people (via IM, phone or videoconferencing)is as easy as drag-and-drop.
• Multiple devices such as your pc, phone and mobile work seamlessly, providing you access to different communications services.

All in all this approach looks capable of simplifying our daily communications significantly and enhancing productivity while at it. We’re already looking forward to Apple’s response >:)
